Preparation Is Key

Preparation Is Key. Painting a room can be a daunting prospect, especially if it is your first time, but with a little planning it can go smoothly if you take the proper care and preparations. To help the painting process, if it is possible, clear out as much of your furniture and ornaments as much as you possibly can. Any leftover furniture can be moved to the centre of the room. Now cover the floor, and furniture you are now ready to start the preparation.

As a traditional decorator, thorough preparation is crucial, and our first step is always to wash surfaces with sugar soap. This initial cleaning provides an excellent foundation for the subsequent preparation work. Some may question why we wash before rubbing down and filling, but this precaution is taken to prevent cross-contamination of surfaces before the painting or wallpapering process.

While it may seem meticulous, this approach ensures a professionally finished decorating project. Following the wash, the next step is the rubbing down process, which can be done by hand using sandpaper and a block or with specialized tools like a hand sander or pole sander. Investing in these tools, though a minor expense, is worthwhile for anyone undertaking a home decoration project.

Before applying any filler

Before applying any filler, it’s imperative to thoroughly rub down all surfaces, including ceilings, walls, and woodwork. Clear any loose filler around architraves and skirting, ensuring smooth edges to prevent injuries during caulk or filler application. Clean up before proceeding with the filling to avoid tracking debris around the room or the entire house.

Fill all holes and cracks in the room, including picture holes, as you might want to rearrange pictures later. Patience is key during this crucial preparation step, as multiple rounds of rubbing down will be necessary. Wear a mask and eye protection during prep work.

Following the filling and rubbing down, embark on a comprehensive clean-up, starting with vacuuming up dust. Wash down surfaces again to eliminate any remaining dust before starting the painting process. Begin with the ceilings, applying two coats for a solid finish. Allow ample drying time to prevent reactivating the previous coat.

Before starting on the walls

Before starting on the walls, lightly sand to remove any paint splashes that may have occurred while painting the ceiling. After another round of cleaning, apply two coats to the walls (more may be needed for deep colors), sanding between coats. Regular cleaning may seem tedious, but it is essential to avoid cross-contamination.

Once the walls are coated to the desired standard, turn attention to the woodwork. Apply an undercoat and finish coat, rubbing down between coats for a smooth finish. If possible, use a tack cloth between sanding for that truly professional touch.

After completing the final clean-up, it’s time to bring in the furniture, hang the curtains, place the pictures, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Brew some tea, grab some biscuits, take a seat, and admire your handy work.
